E-commerce is already huge business. Worldwide retail e-commerce sales reached 2.3 trillion dollars in 2017, making up 10.1% of total retail sales. It's estimated that this share will surpass 15.5% in 2021, when retail e-commerce sales will hit almost 5 trillion dollars. But what strategies are planned for the future to convince the customers to stop buying products in brick and mortar shops and start shopping online?

One of the biggest advantages of e-commerce is its ability to provide a customized shopping experience for every customer and e-commerce companies are trying to utilize this. Personalized online marketing, or one-to-one marketing, is a marketing strategy which is trying to create an automatic system that can analyse the customers’ needs and/or wants. Personalized marketing is a win/win for both the customers as well as the company.

Consumers in the modern world are facing an overwhelming volume and almost infinite variety of products and services that they can purchase. Most sites on the internet contain various advertisements that don’t interest the user. In a survey made by Janrain, 74% of consumers said that they get frustrated when a website has content, offers, or ads that have nothing to do with them. In different study 86% of the consumers said that personal marketing influenced their buying decision, mostly because of the sales, free shipping, and relevant product suggestions.

For businesses, personalized marketing is useful to measure the success of its marketing campaign. Personalized marketing helps companies find out which marketing campaigns are effective and which are not using the demographic, contextual, and/or behavioral data. This allows firms to drop efforts that are ineffective, as well as put more money into the techniques that are bringing in customers. Not only can personal marketing identify successful and unsuccessful campaigns, it can also be a driving force behind an effective one.  Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium came up with a clever way to boost zoo membership using data to identify their biggest fans; they analyzed their membership data, learned which ZIP Codes were home to the zoo’s most frequent guests, and then they targeted discounted campaigns to other people from those areas. The result was a 13% increase in membership. Personal marketing can also boost customers´ loyalty by creating a better shopping experience. For example, Amazon´s algorithms can quite accurately predict a customers preferences based on their previous purchases and offer them only products they would be potentially interested in. This method resulted in a second fiscal quarter in which Amazon reported a 29% sales increase. This growth is directly connected with the implementation of the recommendation process. Personalized marketing is also used by internet companies such as Spotify, Netflix, and YouTube; where computers are trying to predict new videos, music, and even ads that the individual would enjoy. Eventually, the technology will progress to more advanced algorithms beyond the ones used by Amazon and others. These algorithms will be able to precisely estimate the customers’ needs and advertise products that they would actually be willing to buy. In the end, the most crucial benefit is that the revenue of businesses that implement personalized marketing sees an average increase of 19% in total sales.

Personalized marketing is also well known in Central Europe. Exponea Global Sourcing, an international company founded in Slovakia, helps its clients with everything from designing a product to campaigns using personalized marketing methods. On the other hand, Czech company Socialbakers, offers a program which analyzes data from social media and gives their clients a clear look into the popularity of their activity. Similar services are also provided by another Czech company Socialsharks, which not only focuses on analyzing data about their clients´ social media profiles, but also creates marketing campaigns based on trends and customer preferences.

There is also a lot of controversy in the way personalized marketing works, and probably the biggest one is data. Every successful personalized marketing strategy hinges on the large amounts of useful data. A lot of data is harmless, but there are ways companies collect information about you that you might not be happy about. For example, Facebook can use data from your browsing of its page put you into one of their staggering 29,000 categories for advertisement. These categories contain information about the amount of money you have in liquid investable assets, your income, or if you have frequent transactions at lower cost department stores. This information is used for more personalized advertisements on Facebook or they are sold to other companies. This process isn’t applied only by Facebook, but also by many other companies (Google and Apple also collect and sell data about their customers). But there already is some effort from governments to regulate companies’ access and help protect consumer privacy. Since 2015, google is no longer able to read emails sent from Gmail. But even bigger changes are coming.

On the 27th of July, 2016 GDPR was approved by the European Union and it will come into action in the summer of 2018. It is the strictest regulation about protection of personal information in the world; it will affect not only European companies, but also companies in the rest of the world which are operating in the EU. If a company violates some of the rules, they will face large fines up to 4% of their global turnover. A recent study of Verint System shows that 90% of the customers are concerned about their privacy, but at the same time they are seeking highly personalized content. In the future, companies will have to adjust their marketing to be more comfortable for the customer, but also still be highly effective in delivering individualized messages to the customer.
